A short satirical story by Tom Sharpe, published in Punch on 9 July 1986, ‘OPSAAL! DIE BLOEDBAD KOM!’ is a sequel to Riotous Assembly and Indecent Exposure, bringing back Kommandant van Heerden, Lieutenant Verkramp and Konstabel Els in the fictional town of Piemburg. It is set in the mid-1980s, as its references to Margaret Thatcher and the sanctions debate, the ANC, the Black Sash, and Joe Slovo show. It also parodies the sweeping powers of the State of Emergency declared in South Africa only weeks before it was published.
