Special Branch police have arrested Mr. T. R. Sharpe, 33, a Cambridge graduate who has lived in South Africa for 10 years, because he had defied an order to leave South Africa by midnight on Friday. The order had been delayed from November 8 after Mr. Sharpe’s lawyers had made representation to the Minister of the Interior asking for the reasons for his expulsion, which have not been officially disclosed.

Mr. Sharpe is the author of an anti-apartheid play which was produced in London. He was summarily dismissed from his teaching post at Pietermaritzburg after police had raided his home earlier this year. When finally ordered to leave the country, he said he would not do so voluntarily, as he had done nothing to justify his eviction and did not know what was alleged against him.

After his arrest at his home in Pietermaritzburg, Mr. Sharpe was taken to the local prison pending deportation.
